2019 is almost over! So, a quick glance through the major events, that made headlines this year!!!

It was a year of roller coaster ride in terms of politics, climatic change or be it, technology. A year, in which the world witnessed a lot of major events, nationally and internationally.

These major events created history and would apparently be remembered for years to come. Here are the top 5 events that made headlines and were the most trending on the search engines this year.

  1. First Black Hole Image (10th April, 2019)

On April 10 2019, the world witnessed something extraordinary and BIG! The first ever image of black hole was released that measured 40 billion km. It’s humongous size is three million times the size of the Earth. The achievement is the outcome of commendable hard work by scientists, specialized technology and scientific methods.

Scientists devised a massive telescope that connected 7 observatories around the world. A telescope massive enough that it equals the size of Earth.

2. Notre Dame Fire  (15th April, 2019)

April 15 2019, was a sad day for the people and the history of the world. The world weeped seeing the decade old church engulfed in fire. A massive blaze at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris devastated large parts of the 850 year old church.

Shortly, the French Senate passed a bill stating that Notre Dame would soon be rebuilt. For this noble cause, a hefty amount was raised from all over the world.

3. Sri Lanka Explosion (21st April,2019)

On Easter this year (April 21, 2019), Sri Lanka witnessed a major terrorist attack. Three churches and luxury hotels in Colombo were bombarded in simultaneous terrorist attacks. The attack killed over 250 people, leaving around 400 wounded. It included the locals and the foreigners as well.

The government arrested 40 people from the jihadist group in connection with the attack. Hence, the Islamic State (IS) group was held responsible for the attack. After years of peace and harmony, such a gruesome incident took place that left the world devastated.

4. Chandrayaan 2 (22nd July, 2019)

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) attempted for a second lunar exploration Chandrayaan-2. It consisted of a lunar orbiter, the Vikram lander and the Pragyan lunar rover. India was the first to launch a mission to the unexplored Moon’s South Pole.

The aim of the mission was to get a better and complete understanding of the moon discoveries that will benefit India and humanity. Inspite of all, ISRO deserves all the credit for the hard work and effort they put into this mission.  

5. Nobel Prize Winner (10th December, 2019)

Abhijit Banerjee

Abhijit Banerjee, the second Indian to have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2019. Abhijit Banerjee was born in Mumbai. Along with his co-researchers Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer, he received accolade “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty”.

For the ceremony, he dressed up in an Indian attire and looked elegant in a black bandhgala paired with an off white dhoti. His achievement is definitely one of the big accomplishments of 2019, for India.
