Walking daily is a great way to maintain overall health. New scientific research offers a better option to the popular health goal of walking 10,000 steps in a day
Many of us have cultivated the habit of walking daily. Every morning or evening we step out of our house and take rejuvenating steps toward better health.
In this ultra-connected digital age of information explosion, we have also been told by many experts and health enthusiasts about one particularly beneficial strategy of walking daily. This strategy has been termed 10,000 steps.
#1. THE 10,000 STEPS WALKING GOAL
The 10,000-steps-daily approach has spawned a whole Fitbit culture of digital health products and watches. These digital watches track your health fitness. When the Fitbit watch beeps as soon as the owner touches the magical 10,000 steps mark of walking daily, smile and satisfaction on his face follows.
But there is this small matter of investing a fair chunk of time towards completing the 10,000 steps goal daily. This becomes a bit of a dampener for the health-conscious guy who may have managed to take 8500 steps in one day as tracked by his Fitbit watch. But due to lack of time, he could not reach 10,000 steps.
#2. NEW RESEARCH ON WALKING DAILY
Now there is a new study that has emerged on walking daily that questions the feasibility and actual benefits of the 10,000 steps approach.
Medical journalist Michael Mosley investigated the ’10,000 steps a day’ health strategy (link: https://www.bbc.com/news/health-42864061 ) by conducting an experiment with Professor Rob Copeland from Sheffield Hallam University, England. A BBC One TV Channel documentary was done on it called ‘The Truth About Getting Fit’.
Mosley compared the benefits of walking 10,000 steps a day to an alternate form of physical activity called ‘Active 10’. The ‘Active 10’ daily walking-cum-workout was promoted by Public Health England. It involves doing three 10-minute speed walks a day. Mosley discovered that Active 10 was a more beneficial form of physical activity compared to 10,000 steps of walking daily.

#3. YOUR PERSONAL WALKING ROUTINE
Walking daily is really all about setting your own personal walking routine. It’s just that if a limited amount of intense form of physical activity can be added in walking then health benefits increase.
You can opt for measuring and walking 10,000 steps a day or go for Active 10 approach. In the end what matters is how you take out time for walking daily towards good health.
