Summer Foods to beat the heat 47

Summers- the season brings lots of changes from clothing preferences to food choices. We cannot help but adapt the ongoing change. India currently is experiencing the hot weather of summers especially the North Indian region.

So, in order to deal with the rising mercury level, people prefer light clothes and light foods and stay hydrated to quench the thirst. And, here we are, with our take on the summer diet, to help and make you feel lighter this season. 

Curing Curd

Curd is a dairy product rich in protein, calcium, and phosphorus which can be easily prepared at home and is one of the staple food products of India. 

Curd cures digestion, improves bone strength, aids in weight loss and there are other various benefits of curd as well.  

Since we are talking about summer foods, curd has a cooling effect on the stomach and can be consumed directly. And, it can be used in the form of drinks like Buttermilk (Chhaas), Lassi by adding some salt and sugar. There can be fruit raita and vegetable raita, made by mixing diced fruits in sweet curd and chopped basic veggies in the curd with some spices 

Sugarcane Juice 

The desi drink of north India is sugarcane juice (ganne ka ras), which is preferred as a beverage in many parts, especially where sugarcane is commercially grown such as Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, North Africa, and Latin America.  

This juice is extracted from pressed sugarcane. It is served with ice as a cooling drink in summers to quench the thirst & also flavored with a dash of lime, topped with mint leaves and some rock salt to make it more refreshing and tastier.  

It is not just an appetizing drink but it also serves many other purposes. It lowers cholesterol and blood pressure levels, improves digestion and boosts energy. 

Cool Cucumber

Commonly thought of as a vegetable, cucumber is actually a fruit. 

That keeps you hydrated as it contains 96% of water, high in beneficial minerals and nutrients. There are just 16 calories in a cup of cucumber with peel, 15 without peel! 

It helps in weight management, boosts immunity, promotes detoxification, good for skin and many more. All in all, cucumbers contain a plethora of powerful nutrients and vitamins which are essential for promoting physical and mental health.  

It is said to be best consumed with its peel, and other ways to use it in a salad, detox water and with curd too. 

Watermelon

One of the healthiest fruits of summer is Watermelon which has 92 % of water content. This is actually a nutrient dense food that contains high levels of vitamins, minerals & antioxidants, and only a few numbers of calories.

Clearly, it’s a delightful fruit which is healthy as well as tasty. It decreases the risk of obesity and overall mortality, diabetes and heart disease. 

It can be gobbled directly after slicing it, use it in a salad or make juices & mocktails out of it. So, why just sweat in the heat but cope up with it by adding watermelon in our diet. 

There are other fruits & vegetables like tomatoes, onions, coconut water, etc. that helps in keeping up with the scorching heat. Stay safe & cool.
