Countries are taking very strong measures to strict the spread of COVID-19. There’s no doubt about it that this is an uncertain and scary time, but you and your family still need to eat, and the act of preparing and serving a meal. Although self-quarantine and closing of business may affect food-related practices.

In order to support individuals in eating healthy during self-quarantine and isolation, WHO has prepared a set of GENERAL TIPS, a list of BEST FOOD BUYS.

Here are some general tips that can be followed by any individual easily –

  • Take only what you need 
  • Eat only home-cooked meals
  • Limit your salt intake
  • Limit your sugar intake
  • Limit your fat intake 
  • Stay hydrated 
  • Avoid alcohol or at least reduce your consumption
  • Avoid smoking 
  • Enjoy family meals
  • Be strategic about the use of ingredients – use fresh ingredients  

A healthy diet helps us to protect against NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES such as diabetes, heart diseases, strokes, etc. And a healthy diet is the secret of a happy soul. Here are some recommendations of WHO for healthy food –

  • Frozen fruits and veggies 
  • Long-lasting fruits and veggies
  • Kidney beans and chickpeas 
  • Whole grains like rice, buckwheat, and pasta
  • Starchy roots like potato, sweet potatoes. etc
  • Dried fruits, seeds and nuts
  • Eggs
  • Canned vegetables 
  • Canned meat/fish 
  • Low-fat milk

But, at last, the most necessary supplies are already on your hand like water, handwash, sanitizers and a warm place to sleep. It’s also a good idea to make sure you have basic emergency supplies on your hand like three weeks of food, water purifier, water cattle, first aid kits, baby supplies,  a month of needed medications and the most important thing is a plan if someone gets sick.
